Here you can see an example of how cavitation can cause damage to hydraulic components. In this case, it's a cylinder block from a Komatsu axial-piston pump. The erosion inside the bores managed to "eat through" bronze liners up to the steel walls! More on this interesting phenomenon in my post on "Cavitation in Hydraulic Systems".
