Cavitation damage example - hydraulic pump end cap

Here you can see an example of how cavitation can cause damage to hydraulic components. In this case it's an end cap of an axial piston pump. Cavitation cloud originated in a high velocity oil-in-oil jet, coming from the side orifice of the valve plate, and collapsed over the end cap surface, causing significant erosion. For a brief description of this interesting phenomenon please read the article "Cavitation in Hydraulic Systems".
